At the GMG Annual Meeting on Thursday, March 12th, Blethen, Gage and Krause Partner Julia Corbett was honored for her two years of dedicated service as the GMG Board Chair. Julia shared her experiences working with Jonathan Zierdt and the rest of the GMG staff and Board of Directors and stating that she was truly honored to work with such a fantastic group of people. Julia was reelected to continue to serve on the GMG Board of Directors for another 3 years.

Blethen, Gage & Krause is honored to announce that Kevin Velasquez has been selected by the Greater Mankato Growth Young Professionals as the 2014 Young Professional of the Year. This honor is awarded to an individual with a demonstrated commitment to the greater Mankato area through civic and business involvement, especially during the past year. Recipients of this award have demonstrated unwavering commitment to the community through involvement with local organizations that elevate both the overall quality of life in in the Mankato area and Mankato’s ability to attract and retain young talent. Congratulations on this prestigious honor Kevin!!
Kevin has always set himself apart from others through his professional and community involvement, commitment and exemplary performance. After Kevin graduated with distinction from the University of Iowa, College of Law in 2007, he quickly became involved in numerous professional associations. He has served as the President of the Minnesota State Bar Association Sixth District (serving as Sixth District President in 2012), and has been active in the Federal Bar Association, the Minnesota Defense Lawyers Association, the Defense Research Institute and the Greater Mankato Growth Young Professionals. Kevin has volunteered time for the Federal Bar Association Pro Se Project, Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services, and LegalCorps, helping low-income individuals with their legal needs.
Additionally, Kevin has worked hard to give back to the region through his extensive involvement in community organizations. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Mankato YWCA for the last five years. He is currently the chair of the Mankato United Way’s Enhancing the Lives of People with Disabilities Community Impact Team. He is actively involved in the Mankato Sertoma Club, a local service organization with a primary mission of improving life for those affected by hearing loss, serving as the organization’s President. Kevin has also been involved with the Mankato Diversity Council as a classroom facilitator. As a classroom facilitator, Kevin goes into the local schools to present a lesson to the students, from kindergarteners to seniors in high school, on various topics related to diversity, respect, and acceptance.

The article highlights Ben’s work with Habitat for Humanity of South Central MN where he serves as Affiliate Board President. “With Ben at the leadership helm, the Habitat ReStore is currently undergoing a large expansion project… The current HFSCMN ReStore is leading the state in sales growth and adwarded the “Best Practice Award” from Habitat MN for holding the highest sales increase in 2012.” As stated in the article, Ben is thrilled to be a large stake-holder in this important piece of Habitat history and is grateful for the opportunity to work with an organization making such a positive impact on the lives of so many Southern Minnesota families. Blethen, Gage and Krause is pleased to announce that Partners Christopher Roe, Beth Serrill, and Kevin Velasquez have been selected as 2013 Minnesota Rising Stars by Minnesota Law and Politics. This is a prestigious honor as no more than 2.5% of the attorneys in the state are named to the list. The selection process is rigorous. Lawyers are asked to nominate the best attorneys who are 40 or under, or who have been practicing for 10 years or less. They are instructed to nominate lawyers they have personally observed in action — whether as opposing counsel or co-counsel, or through other firsthand courtroom observation. In addition to the general survey, the attorney-led research team reviews the credentials of potential candidates and assigns points based on a set of defined evaluation criteria. The point totals from the general survey and research process are then added to arrive at a final tally and those with the highest point totals are named to the Rising Stars list.
Chris Roe focuses his practice in the areas of Agricultural Law, Business Law, Real Estate, and Estate Planning, Wills, Trusts and Probate. A large part of Chris’ practice is devoted to assisting individuals and businesses in the agricultural setting. Chris is a farmer himself; he and his family operate Roe Farms, a large crop/hog operation near LeRoy, MN. He is also routinely involved in agricultural, commercial and residential real estate matters such as purchase agreements, title opinions, title
insurance, closings, tax appeals and real estate disputes.He is active in the Mankato Downtown Kiwanis Club and the Miracle League of North Mankato. This is Chris’ second year receiving the Rising Star designation.
Beth Serrill specializes in a variety of practice areas including Employment Law, Family Law, Personal Injury, and Education Law. She represents companies in all areas of employment law including unemployment, discrimination and general liability issues.She is active in Minnesota Women Lawyers, the YWCA, March of Dimes, SMILES, the United Way and also serves on the Board of Directors of The Children’s Museum of Southern Minnesota. Beth has also done numerous speaking engagements including those for the YWCA, the Jeanne Thorne Employment Seminar, and the SMAHRA Employment Law Seminar. This is Beth’s second year receiving the Rising Star designation.
