Serena is no stranger to being there for people when they need help the most. Before coming to Blethen Berens, she spent almost three years working as a criminal defense attorney, first as a Justice Fellow working in the public defender’s office representing people in underserved rural areas, then as a private criminal defense attorney in larger counties surrounding St. Louis with Rose Legal Services. In criminal defense, Serena routinely had to meet with and listen to her clients, communicate with prosecutors to try and resolve cases favorably outside of the courtroom, and advocate to judges and juries on behalf of her client in the court room too. Now in Mankato, Serena is bringing her courtroom skills and passion for helping people to her civil litigation practice.
Serena graduated from the University of Iowa College of Law in 2023. She also earned her bachelors from the University of Iowa where she graduated with distinction majoring in Political Science and Philosophy and minoring in Arabic. Serena’s love for public speaking and community developed early, competing in public forum debate beginning in high school, then on her undergraduate mock trial team, and later returned to coach the same mock trial team while in law school.
In her free time, Serena loves spending time with her family and listening to and playing music. She also enjoys being with animals whether it’s her two dogs and two cats, or at a local animal shelter.
